Lake and Watershed Policy Research Movement and usage of water in lakes and watershed, in Lake Biwa, East Asia, and in the world are the keys for our approaches to figure out environmental dynamics and to resolve problems.
Environmental Economics and Policy Research "Environmental issues are uncovered from the viewpoint of economics and how ecological economics should function is reviewed in order to seek for a sustainable society.
Research activities on environmental planning / management and the state of social common capital are conducted for creation of environmental rehabilitation type communities, and such proposals are offered.
Environmental Education Research Environmental Education and Environmental Learning based upon environmental research results are proposed and put into practice in order to realize a sustainable society.
Human and Regional Environment Research Environmental management systems, which are inherent in local communities, are explored and examined from frames of culture, regular vocation, life style, and families. Potentiality of transformation of our life styles from resource-consuming type to resource-circulation type is researched and proposed.

Lake and Watershed Policy Research Division

~ Purpose and Feature of the division ~

In this division, the tradition of our researches on the lake environment has been inherited expansively through historical developments of the institute such as Lake Research Office, Institute of Lake Science, and Center for Environmental Education and Lake Science. The division forms the distinctive field of environmental research in Shiga University which is situated in Shiga Prefecture owning Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan and the ancient and the most precious lake in the natural history.

Environmental Economics and Policy Research Division

~ Purpose and Feature of the division ~

The relationship between the social/economical system and the “environment” surrounding it is studied from multifaceted perspectives such as “sustainability” and “social spending”. The comprehensive social scientific research on the environmental problems are conducted by prosecuting studies on analysis of the social/economical system and on the value assessment/structure of the environment in order to advance the review of the social scientific methodology from the environmental viewpoint.
This division’s aim is to conduct researches on various issues of public policies for environmental conservation theoretically and demonstratively. The integrated and systematic researches on three policy fields including pollution prevention, nature protection, and amenity conservation, which are basic challenges of environmental policies, are promoted, and also the theoretical and empirical researches on policy instruments and on “public nature” and “public interest” of our own time are carried out.

Environmental Education Research Division

~Purpose and Feature of the division~

This division follows expansively theoretical research capacities relating to environmental education and environmental learning from the environmental education division of Center for Environmental Education and Lake Science.

Human and Regional Environment Research Division

~Purpose and Feature of the division~

The target of this division is to conduct researches on various factors influencing the social environment and the life style in Lake Biwa watershed and surrounding areas. Resolution of environmental problems including the social and the cultural environment from perspectives of human and regional environment is intended. It is the interdisciplinary environmental research division which focuses on human and social scientific disciplines.
